The Girl Who Did Not Like Her Name Book Review

Just recently, author Chloe Jon Paul provided me with her children's book to review here on Michigan Home Mommy Works.  I was especially excited because one of the character's names in the book happens to be my 6 year old's name: Alessandra.

We typically call her Alyssa or Lyssa, for short.  When we call her by her full birth name, she looks at us like we are from another planet and really does not like to be called Alessandra.  Not as of yet anyways.  I figure it's because she is so used to her nickname and I guess that makes a whole lot of sense, right?

Before I summarize the book, let me introduce to you Chloe Jon Paul:

Chloe Jon Paul, M.Ed., is a "retired educator and writer of several published articles and a previous book entitled:What Happens Next: A Family Guide to Nursing Home Visits” and More.  Here are some other awesome achievements since the age of 55:
  • Title of Ms. Maryland Senior America 2003
  • Recipient of the Fulbright Fellowship Seminars Abroad award to South Africa, 1996
  • Volunteer internship during the 2005 Maryland legislative session as a Legacy Leadership Institute graduate
  • Lead facilitator for the Alternatives to Violence Project in prison and community workshops on conflict resolution for ten years
  • State representative for the National Family Caregivers Association’s caregiver community action network 2006-2008
  • Advisory board member: MD, Healthcare Commission and the Interagency Commission for Aging Services: Maryland Dept. of Aging
  • Hospice and homeless shelter volunteer
  • Coordinator for the Good Samaritan Project at her church
  • World traveler – all 7 continents
Very impressive work as well as inspirational.

The Girl Who Did Not Like Her Name

Alessandra Theresa Petrucci doesn’t like her name one bit. When she was little, grown-ups would say, “My! My! Such a BIG name for such a little girl.”

Her mother insisted on calling her Alessandra. “Sandra or Sandy just isn’t right for you,” she would say. “No, Alessandra is just fine!” Her mother insisted that everyone else call her that too.

Last year when she had started first grade and learned to print her name, she couldn’t fit her full name across the paper. Her letters were too big and clumsy yet.

“You have a lovely name,” her teacher had said. “When your printing gets better, you’ll be able to write smaller. Maybe you could leave out your middle name for now.”

“My name is almost as long as the whole alphabet!” Alessandra Theresa wailed.

She knows that she was named after her great-great grandmother but her response to that is “I think that’s dumb! Why do I have to have the name of somebody who’s dead? She wasn’t even famous!”

Alessandra spends a lot of time trying to figure out how to change her name or at least shorten it but when she visits her grandmother during summer vacation, something unexpected and wonderful happens!

Young readers will be delighted and fascinated with what Alessandra Theresa discovers when she climbs up to the attic of her grandmother’s house. Later, when her grandmother asks her to tell her about the problem she has been having, she matter-of-factly replies, “Oh, that – it’s not a problem anymore!”

What makes Alessandra Theresa Petrucci change her mind about her name?

Read The Girl Who Did Not Like Her Name and learn what happens. ~Chloe Jon Paul

I love the ending!  Let's just say I hope that my Alessandra will see that her name is special and beautiful just like her.

Does your child happen to have an issue with their own name?  This book might be of a help to them.  My Alessandra isn't quite convinced as of yet, but that's probably because she is only 6.  In time she will see she has a ballerina of a name.

A big thank you goes to Chloe Jon Paul for allowing me to review her book today.  It has been an honor and a privilege to do so.

Cold Weather Strategy For New Moms

Happy Friday, Michigan moms and visiting readers.  I have some information to pass on from a Dr. Luis Navarro that you may be interested in, especially if you are a new mom.

With a newborn at home and the flu epidemic on the rise, it’s important to consider the role that circulation plays in staying healthy during the cold winter months. Pregnancy and then being on your feet all day with your baby can contribute to painful varicose veins forming, due to a lack of circulation in the legs. The cold weather causes even more circulation issues because when temperatures drop, the body reduces blood flow to the extremities, as a way to keep the blood in the main arteries of the body. This may cause cold hands and feet, making flu season even more difficult for you and your newborn.

Dr. Luis Navarro-- Director of The Vein Treatment Center, (  offers easy and effective ways to optimize blood circulation tips that cater to new moms.  Before introducing these tips, let me share with you more about Dr. Navarro:

Luis Navarro, M.D.

Dr. Luis Navarro, Director of The Vein Treatment Center in New York, NY, one of the most well-respected and established physicians in the country, has devoted his life's work to the treatment of venous disorders (varicose and spider veins). Formally schooled at the University of Barcelona, he came to New York in 1969 where he began his surgical training at Mount Sinai Hospital. His interest in phlebology flourished and by the late 1970's, while practicing as a general surgeon, he began to investigate and develop new approaches to treating varicose and spider veins. At the same time he became one of the first members of the American College of Phlebology, a society dedicated to the research and treatment of venous disorders.

In light of his new experience in venous disorders, Dr. Navarro founded the Vein Treatment Center in 1982, where he currently holds his practice.  He developed a novel approach to treating varicose veins called Combined TherapiesÔ that merges minimally invasive techniques to achieve the maximum cosmetic results.  In 1988, Bantam Books published his book,  “No More Varicose Veins”. With the medical field moving towards more minimally invasive procedures performed in the office, he began to investigate laser therapies for treating varicose veins. In 1999 he and his colleagues developed, and were awarded a United States Patent for the Endovenous Laser Ablation technique, which became FDA approved in 2002. Now used worldwide, Endovenous Laser Ablation is the preferred method of treatment over traditional Ligation and Stripping, due to its minimally invasive characteristics. The procedure is performed in-office, using only local anesthesia and requiring only a tiny nick in the skin. Patients are up on their feet immediately following surgery with no downtime and little to no scarring.

Dr. Navarro, an innovator and a leader in the field of phlebology for 25 plus years, continues to utilize and advance his techniques at the Vein Treatment Center and has performed tens of thousands of medical procedures. Among the latest equipment and most advanced treatment methods he employs are sclerotherapy, foam sclerotherapy, duplex sonogram-guided sclerotherapy, endovenous laser treatment (Endolaser), and mini phlebectomy, all performed in-house under local anesthesia. Dr. Navarro's facility, the Vein Treatment Center, remains one of first and only facilities exclusively devoted to the treatment of venous disorders.

Here are 10 tips for optimizing the circulatory system:

§ GET REGULAR EXERCISE. Any type of exercise that strengthens the "second heart" - the muscles of the calf and foot – is beneficial. Exercise for at least 30 minutes a day, 3 times a week.
§ WEAR GRADUATED COMPRESSION STOCKING. Compression stockings act like an added layer of muscle, aiding the performance of the "second heart" and venous circulation.
§ MONITOR HORMONE INTAKE. Birth control pills and hormone replacement therapy constrict blood vessels and can weaken vein valves and vein walls.
§ AVOID PROLONGED PERIODS OF SITTING AND STANDING. Rotate your ankles and feet whenever possible, walk for at least 10 minutes every hour, and point and flex your toes to promote leg vein circulation.
§ ELEVATE YOUR FEET. Raise your feet 6 to 12 inches above your heart whenever possible to assist circulation.
§ EAT A HIGH FIBER & LOW SALT DIET. Salt retains water and constipation puts pressure on the venous system.
§MAINTAIN AN APPROPRIATE BODY WEIGHT FOR YOUR FRAME. Obesity can strain the circulatory system.
§WEAR LOOSE-FITTING CLOTHING.  Tight garments can restrict the flow of blood to and from the legs.
§CONSIDER DIETARY SUPPLEMENTS.  Vitamins C and E act as antioxidants, which are good for circulation.  Flavonoids, butcher's broom, and Horse Chestnut Seed Extract (HCE50) improve venous circulation and decrease symptoms of venous disease.
§AVOID CROSSING YOUR LEGS. Leg crossing constricts veins and increases venous pressure.

These are excellent tips.  Thank you to Dr. Luis Navarro for sharing this important information with us. If you are a new mom or know of a new mom, please feel free to share this information with them.

If you have any questions or inquiries regarding advertising or feature posts, please contact me directly at

Kendra Thornton Shares her Favorite Dish: Maui Onion and Sesame Seed Crusted Seared Ahi

Good afternoon Michigan mommies!  I would like to introduce to you an amazing mom with a passion for travel and authentic cuisine: Kendra Thornton.

Kendra is "a long time travel expert who has been packing her bags and traveling the world since she was 3 months old!"

"My passion for travel is only eclipsed by my passion for my three beautiful children.  I've been lucky to combine the two, and am often featured as an expert in family, luxury, and adventure for FOX News, ABC, CBS, NBC, and CW networks." ~Kendra Thornton

Kendra, has been to 28 countries on 6 continents, and have been quoted in the news about seasonal travel trends and destinations all over the United States.  She is now stepping out of the corporate spotlight to take on her role of being the number one mom and wife to a family of three.  Kendra's utmost desire in life is in her home town.  She has mixed her excitement for travel by bringing the taste of authentic cuisine to her own home with some of her unique recipes.

Kendra would like to share with us one of her amazing recipes:

Maui Onion and Sesame Seed Crusted Seared Ahi

"Hawaii has a rich culture of food-the islands are a meeting point for Asian, Pacific Island, and American Cuisine, giving rise to unique flavors and dishes rarely seen elsewhere.  On my own trip to beautiful Maui, I was especially struck by one dish, and I wanted to bring it home to share with my east coast friends and family."

"At the Lahaina Grill Restaurant, located on the ocean-bordering Front Street in historic Lahaina, I was lucky to try a delicious local specialty: Maui Onion and Sesame Seed Crusted Seared Ahi.  At my first bite, I could tell that this was a special fish, a perfect cut just browned and still delicately rare on the inside.  The flavors of the sesame mingled wonderfully with the apple-cider-butter vinaigrette and the caramelized onions-finished off with gently vanilla-seasoned rice, the meal was astounding.  Here's how to make it yourself:"

"The two keys to this recipe are the cut of the fish and the caramelized onions.  Try to find 'sashimi-grade' Ahi Tuna steaks (high-quality tuna that can be consumed raw) and prepare them (or have them prepared) as if they were 'center-cut' fillet steaks: filleted, trimmed, and cut."

"If you can't find Maui onions, it's fine to substitute sweet onions-the flavor will be essentially identical.  You'll need:"

-28 oz. of onions (16 to caramelize and 12 to slice).  Dehydrate and crush for the tuna crust.  Slice the onions, erring toward thick slices and over medium-high heat, cook them with olive oil in a heavy-bottomed pan, stirring until caramelized.  Set them aside.  Crush the remaining onions and mix with sesame seeds, then use this mixture to coat the tuna steaks.    Sear the steaks on all sides, browning them and cooking just to rare or medium-rare temperature.

You'll also need delicious rice in order to complete the dish.  Jasmine rice provides the best flavor-while you work with the fish and onions.  Cook the rice with a vanilla bean, shallots, and butter in a clam or fish broth.  These flavors will come together wonderfully!

Apple-Cider Soy Butter Vinaigrette provides the finishing touch.  Combine apple cider, white balsamic vinegar, and cider vinegar in a pan and reduce to 1/2 a cup.  When you're ready to serve, pulse the mixture in a blender with soy margarine and butter, then season with chives.

To plate this masterpiece of Hawaiian cooking, arrange the rice in the center of a plate, topped with Ahi and a spoonful of caramelized onions.  Drizzle the fish with sauce and garnish the dish with chives.  A freshly steamed vegetable on the side completes a wholesome and delicious meal.

I realized that where you ate was just as important as where you rest your head at night.  I was so glad to bring this recipe home with me and I hope you enjoy it just as much as my family and I have.~Kendra Thornton

Thank you so much Kendra, for sharing your experiences and delightful recipe with us.  I look forward to trying this dish with my family.

    Bio-Scriptives Repiderm Acne Treatment Review

Good afternoon, Michigan moms.  I have a product you may be interested in learning about if you currently struggle with stubborn acne or have a teenager currently struggling with it.

As a teenager, I didn't experience major acne, just a few pimples here and there.  Having oily skin can be tricky with acne issues.  Even now as a homeschooling mom of three, I am noticing slight stress is causing me breakouts.  I also tend to break out if I use regular soaps.  I am a hypoallergenic gal.  My skin hates anything different.  How about you?  Are you still experiencing acne even into adulthood?  Maybe you have  a teenage boy or girl experiencing heartache and low self-esteem because of acne.  Whatever your situation, read on.

I was just recently introduced to Bio-Scriptives Repiderm.  Here is what this product is in a nutshell:

Bio-Scriptives Repiderm is an advanced acne treatment formulated with a proprietary blend of 16 herbal extracts and essential oils, and 4.4% benzoyl peroxide. It works in multiple ways to clear and prevent acne blemishes, pimples, blackheads, and whiteheads. Unlike other acne products, Repiderm works as a single standalone product rather than a multi-step system.

Repiderm, when used for the management of acne, works multiple ways to prevent acne. The unique formulation:
    • Clears up acne blemishes, acne pimples, blackheads, and whiteheads and allows skin to heal
    • Controls acne pimples
    • Helps keep skin clear of new acne pimples
    • Helps prevent new acne pimples from forming
    • Helps prevent the development of new acne pimples
Active ingredient: 4.4% Benzoyl PeroxideOther ingredients:Distilled Water, Aloe, Propylene Glycol, Cetyl Alcohol, Glyceryl Stearate, Arginine HCI, Dimethicone, Cyclomethicone, PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Coleus Forskohlii Root Oil, Lemon Oil, Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree) Leaf Oil, Eucalyptus Oil, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Oil, Sodium Chloride, Fragrance, Xantham Gum, Allantoin, Calendula Officinalis Flower Extract, Algae Extract, Althaea Officianalis Root Extract, Echinacea Angustifolia Extract, Chamomile Extract, Melia Azadirachta Seed Oil, Methylisothiazolinone, Sodium EDTA, Methyl Nicotinate.Instructions for use:

    • Clean the skin thoroughly before applying this product.
    • Cover the entire affected area with a thin layer one to three times daily.
    • Start with one application daily, then gradually increase to two or three times daily if needed or as directed by a doctor.
    • If bothersome dryness or peeling occurs, reduce application to once a day or every other day.
    • If going outside, apply sunscreen after using this product. If irritation or sensitivity develops, stop use of both products and ask a doctor.
    Retail value: $27.00

I am currently trying out the product and so far so good.  I haven't experienced any redness or dryness which is a plus.  My skin hates other acne treatments.  I am all for herbal extracts and essential oils.  It smells natural too.

You can purchas Bio-Scriptives Repiderm by clicking HERE.  They also have a variety of other skin-care products to choose from.

I will not be doing a giveaway for this product through Rafflecopter, but I do have two samples up for grabs.  First two Michigan readers to email me at expressing their interest will receive a full sample of this product.

    The Big Kid SecureDrive™ Giveaway

When it comes to kids and technology it's inevitable, right?  Children are thriving with advancing technology as the years go by.  This can be an exciting thing, but it can also turn into a nightmare for many kids and their families.  From cyber-bullies to cyber-stalkers, it's to the point where our kids aren't even safe in an online setting.

I was just recently introduced to a product that I think you as a parent of a Internet savvy child will also appreciate.  It's called the Big Kid SecureDrive™.  "It is a safe and fun Internet environment contained in a bootable USB flash drive.  With an award-winning, Children's Internet Protection Act-compliant web content filter and parental monitoring tools, the Big Kid SecureDrive protects children from predators, scammers, and other dangers online.  Preloaded educational games, web browswers, office software, and support for thousands of Windows applications keep kids entertained." Visit for more information.

As a mom of girls old enough to use the Internet, the Big Kid SecureDrive is definitely a God send.  I am always leery of letting my girls play even just educational games.  Because of that, most of our computer learning is done at the library for those safety reasons.  But now with this bootable USB flash drive, I now feel that my children are safe and they can play their educational games in the comfort of their own home.  Sure, we have parental blocks and firewalls already installed on our computers, but having extra help puts all stresses at ease.

You simply just insert the USB flash drive into your PC.  A box will pop up with a list:
    • Big Kid Docs
    • Adult text document
    • Big Kid SecureDrive
    • Run Big Kid Application
After you have gone through the documents, just click on "Run Big Kid Application" a black box will open up and will ask your permission to gather info, etc.  Super easy.  It takes about 2 minutes to set up.

Because the filter runs off of a flash drive, nothing is ever installed onto your computer.  This was my main concern in the beginning.
Here are a few other bits of info regarding the Big Kid SecureDrive:
    • Big  Kid Secure Drive is set to update content filters automatically, not updating required.
    • It can be used on an unlimited amount of computers.
    • The secure drive includes over 80 games
    • Educational applications include age appropriate math, spelling, and science programs.
    • It includes a word processor, spreadsheet and presentation software. The files produced by the Big Kid SecureDrive™ office suite are compatible with Microsoft Office.
    • There are no additional fees. The one time purchase price is the only cost to you.
Right now you can buy the SecureDrive for $16.95, 50% off the regular retail cost, at
And the full list of features is at

What Daddy Did Today: A Father's Bedtime Story: Review

I was just recently given the opportunity to review a new children's book: What Daddy Did Today: A Father's Bedtime Story by Walter Wally, Illustrated by Judith Bicking. Here is a brief summary from the book itself:
"What does Daddy do when he leaves the house each morning?  You might be surprised!  What Daddy Did Today: A Father's Bedtime Story is Daddy's chance to tell his child about all of the amazing things he does while he is away at work.  But amidst the heart-pounding excitement, which includes wrestling a dragon, and traveling to outer space in a hot air balloon, Daddy has only one thing on his  mind-getting back home to his child.~ Walter Wally
    "Walter Wally
    is glad to meet ya.
He lives on the beach, and he loves pizza."
(Inside flap of What Daddy Did Today: A Father's Bedtime Sory)
Author, Walter Wally, "is the author of many short stories for children and adults.  What Daddy Did Today: A Father's Bedtime Story is the first of Walter's stories to be published, which makes him very proud.  But if Walter has anything to say about it, this is just the beginning.  So, mommies, please be on the lookout for What Mommy Did Today because its coming next in this series, and trust me, she did a lot.  Walter's literary inspirations is Shel Silverstein his storytelling inspirations is Bill Cosby, and his personal inspirations is his wife." (What Daddy Did Today: A Father's Bedtime Story)

What Daddy Did Today: A Father's Bedtime Story, is definitely a cute bedtime story from dads to kids.  I can honestly say that the book was not what I expected.  My original thought upon looking at the title and cover was that it simply was going to be a small story based on a fictional character's father.  A day in the life of, so to speak.  It just happens to be a fun imaginary adventure that I think you, your hubby, and children will enjoy.  In the end, no matter what daddy does in his day even as grand as traveling through outer space in a hot air balloon, nothing compares to the love and pleasure of tucking a child into bed for the night.  I am definitely looking forward to What Mommy Did Today.  His and Hers bedtime stories for the kids, gotta love that.

If you would be interested in purchasing this book, visit:

A big thank you goes to Walter Wally for allowing me the opportunity to review this book.  It was definitely a joy and a privilege.  My children love it!
