Upcoming Children's Books

Girl Standing Behind Stack of Big Books

I trust you all had a wonderful Christmas.  I can't believe it has come and gone.  It seems to go by faster every year, especially when there are kids involved.

As we approach 2013, I have a couple children's books that I will be reviewing here on the blog.  I won't reveal the titles as of yet because, well quite frankly, I am sitting here in bed recovering from a stomach bug.  I can't seem to get myself up to go grab the titles to share with you.  Hang tight though, they will  be made available shortly.

I am excited about one in particular, as it has to do with a name that just happens to be my middle daughter's name, good stuff.

Well, sorry so short, I can barely keep my eyes open.  This Michigan mom needs a nap and to regain her strength.  Such a bummer.  I usually don't get sick and when I do, ugh it knocks me down.  Thankfully, nobody else in the house is sick.  I think I just need to learn how to slow down. God may be testing me in this way.

If I don't post tomorrow, stay tuned for Monday!

Many blessings everyone.

Valentine's Day Advertising Guide 2013

It's not even Christmas and yet you are already seeing "Valentine's Day" in the title.  Wow, right? Haha! Well, as I have posted in the past, I was going to try and do a Christmas guide advertising mom businesses and services.  But, because I was too late in my decision, I decided to post-pone until next year and put the invite out in September instead.  There was a great response, so I am pretty excited about that.

For Valentine's Day, I would like to do a mini advertising guide showcasing any specials or promotions you may be having.  If you would like to advertise a product or service for this upcoming Valentine's Day guide (which will be available well in advance of Valentine's Day), please email me at lindsey@michiganhomemommyworks.com.  It will only be $5 for inclusion.  Custom Cakes by Kimi and Walls Gifts and More are just a couple of the businesses you may be seeing in the upcoming Michigan mom business guide.   In order for the online guide to be active, there must be 10 + businesses on board.  The lastest you can respond to this opportunity is January 15, 2013.  Reserve your spot today. Again, lindsey@michiganhomemommyworks.com

Let us remember to continually pray for all of the families and friends who lost loved ones in the Newport, CT tragedy.  I am sure many families will not be celebrating Christmas this year.  Lord help them!

Remembering the Precious Children and Adults in Newport, Connecticut

Today, my heart is saddened.  As you know, families and friends in Newport, Connecticut lost precious loved ones this past Friday, December 14, 2012.  I cannot image the complete horror and devastation these parents faced when they found out their precious babies lives were taken from them.

As I see pictures of these sweet faces slowly unfold, my heart aches with tears streaming down my face.  Mommies and daddies no longer wake up with the smiles, joy, and wonder of their precious child.  Wishing it is a nightmare, reality sets in for these families.  Christmas will be dark and grief and sorrow will consume these families in the days ahead.

Here is my prayer, feel free to pray it with me.  My heart's desire that many turn to Jesus in the days ahead.  I understand this is not popular, but I am not afraid to stand up for what I believe in.  Having been through a different type of tragedy of losing a child (baby), my faith and hope could only grow stronger.  I just can't imagine this type of loss, ugh my heart beats harder at the thought.

My prayer...

"Lord, be with these families this day.  I know comfort and peace seems so far fetched right now.  These families will feel like they can't go on without them.  It's time to turn to you, Jesus. It's time to realize we need you back in the schools. Our future is so uncertain, but through Christ, we have eternal hope."

A fellow blogger is posted on "26 Acts of Kindness" to remember all the lives lost.  Feel free to participate in this as a beautiful tribute to all of these children and adults.

Many blessings to you all.  Hold your families today

Scrumptious Blueberry French Toast Recipe PLUS Panera Bread Gift Card Giveaway

Are you looking for some fun holiday recipes?  How about holiday breakfast or brunch recipes?  I was recently introduced to a blueberry french toast recipe using Panera Bread's cinnamon raisin bread.

This is our variation using Panera Bread's Cinnamon Raisin Bread, but you get the idea below.

Here are the ingredients and directions posted by Panera Bread

Ingredients

  • 1 loaf Panera Bread Cinnamon Raisin Bread
  • 8 ounces reduced-fat cream cheese spread, at room temperature
  • 4 tablespoons confectioners’ sugar
  • 2 tablespoons grated orange zest
  • ¾ cup fresh blueberries
  • 6 large eggs
  • 1 ½ cups whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

  • Directions

    1. "Cut bread into 1 1/4-inch-thick slices (you should have about 8 slices). Cut a slit through the top crust of each slice to form a deep pocket.

    2. In a medium bowl, mix together the cream cheese, 3 tablespoons of sugar, and orange zest. Stir in blueberries and spoon filling equally into bread pockets. Lay stuffed slices of bread in a shallow 4-quart baking dish, such as a 15-inch-by-10-inch dish.

    3. In medium bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, vanilla, salt, and remaining the 1 tablespoon of sugar. Pour mixture evenly over bread, tilting the dish to completely coat the bread. Let sit until the liquid is absorbed, at least 30 minutes at room temperature or covered in the refrigerator overnight.

    4. Coat a large skillet or griddle with cooking spray, oil, or butter, and heat over medium-high heat. Add the Panera Bread Cinnamon Raisin Bread and cook until nicely browned and crisp outside, about 5 minutes per side."

TIP: "If you don’t have whole milk, use 1 cup 2 percent milk and 1/2 cup heavy cream."

    Nutritional Info: 489 calories, 19 g protein, 61 g carbohydrate, 20 g fat, 259 mg cholesterol, 443 mg sodium, 3 g dietary fiber

    Holiday Hair for Girls Tutorial

Hello everyone!  This morning I have a holiday tutorial you may be interested in especially, if you are the mom/parent of a little girl.

As a mom of three girls, I am always looking for creative ways to do their hair even around Christmas time.  I was introduced to this tutorial by www.cozycutsforkids.com on easy hair do's and wanted to share with you. The styles are so elegant and unique as you will see below. Enjoy!

    Heart Braid

Cozy's signature style, this is a must-have look for the holidays.

What You’ll Need: Wide-tooth comb, fine-tooth comb, decorative hair clip, ponytail holders

Step 1: Starting with damp hair (either towel-dried or misted), use a wide-tooth comb to detangle the hair. Then, using a fine-tooth comb, part the hair down the middle of the head. Clip one side up right above the ear.

Step 2: On the other side of the part, use the fine comb to gather a thin section of hair from the crown. This section should measure about 2 inches from the hairline to the top of the head.

Step 3: Divide this section into three, and begin a French braid starting at the crown and curving toward the temple, then toward the back of the head, like the top lobe of a heart. You will be lifting hair into the braid only from this side of the part. Leave no loose hair in front of the ears.

Step 4: When you reach the center part at the back of the head, secure the braid with a ponytail holder. If the hair is very long, end the braid about mid ear; the ends will hang down the back.

Step 5: Unclip the hair on the other side of the part and repeat the process. Secure with a ponytail holder.

Step 6: Join the ends of the braids together in the back with a decorative bow or ponytail holder to form the bottom point of the heart.

    The Present Bow

This adorable style will make your child’s hair the talk of the town. Create a perfect bow to wrap up your child’s holiday look. It’s an easy style that can be used for everyday wear as well. Note: the hair should be long enough to create a bow.

What you’ll need: Brush/wide-tooth comb, spray bottle of water,fine-tooth comb, hair spray, spray-on hair glitter, hairpins

Step 1: Starting with dry hair, brush or comb the hair to smooth and detangle it. Lightly mist it with water so it is slightly damp. Using the fine-tooth comb, part hair in the center.

Step 2: On one side of the part near the hairline, pick up a 1-inch section of hair to create a long strand.

Step 3: Repeat on the other side of the part, to create a second strand of hair. Join the two strands together by creating a loose knot. Spray the knot and pin it in place. Then loosely create the perfect bow, tying the two strands together. Pin each bow in place and spray with hairspray to secure the bow. For a finishing touch, cover the bow with spray-on hair glitter; be generous with the glitter if you really want your bow to sparkle!

    The French Braid Headband
Besides being a great way to keep hair off the face, this braided headband makes its own accessory. Girls can wear it with their hair hanging down in back, or with a ponytail.

What You’ll Need: Wide-tooth comb, fine-tooth comb, ponytail holders, jaw clip, decorative bobby pins.

Step 1: Start with damp hair (either towel –dried or misted) and use a wide-tooth comb to detangle the hair.

Step 2: Use a fine-tooth comb to draw a horizontal line across the crown from the top of one ear to the top of the other ear. From the line, comb the hair forward to the face. Pull the hair in back of the line into a ponytail holder or jaw clip so it stays out of your way.

Step 3: Choose which ear you want the braid to start from. Tilt the head so the ear you’ve chosen is facing up toward the ceiling. With your child’s ear tilted up, being making the braided headband using the hair in front of the part.

Step 4: Once you’ve reached the other ear, secure the braid with a ponytail holder. If you like, tuck it behind the ear and pin it in place with a few bobby pins. Remove the ponytail holder or jaw clip use in Step 2 and style as you like. Finish by adding sparkly or decorative hairpins through different parts of the braid.

    The Braided Bun

This simple way of scooping hair up always makes girls feel grown-up. And the braided bun is extremely versatile – it can be adorned with a fun clip or headband to dress it up, or worn alone as a stylish and effective way to keep hair off the face.

What You’ll Need: Ponytail holder, bobby pins, beaded/decorative pins, decorative hair band.

Step 1: Gather hair in a loose ponytail. Make a braid with the ponytail, tying it off with a ponytail holder.

Step 2: Twist the braided ponytail into a tight rope, coiling it around itself at the base.

Step 3: Tuck the ends of the coil into the ponytail holder at the base. Then secure the bun by pushing bobby pins into the hair at the bun’s base on all sides. Lightly spritz the bun with hair spray or spray-on hair glitter to lock in the style.

    The Quadruple Twist

A quick flick of the wrist creates this cute coif that only looks complicated. You can fancy it up with pretty beads or barrettes to go with your child’s holiday outfit.

What You’ll Need: Spray bottle, fine-tooth comb, hair clip to section hair, small ponytail holders, mini- clips, hair gel or light styling cream

Step 1: Mist the hair with the spray bottle to make it damp but not wet. Part in the middle with a fine-tooth comb, and gather a section of the hair on one side of the part, from the part to the outer eyebrow.

Step 2: Divide this section in half, with one half near the part and on half away from it. Clip the half closest to the part out of the way.

Step 3: Hold the remaining half and begin twisting it on a diagonal path toward the part. Twist firmly, gathering additional hair as you twist, but not so tightly that it hurts. Twist till you reach the part, then secure the end with a ponytail holder, letting the excess hair hand down.

Step 4: Unclip the half-section closest to the part and mist again. Using the same method, twist this section firmly in the direction of the part. Secure with a ponytail holder.

Step 5: Repeat the process on the other side of the part to create tow more twists, for a total of four.

Step 6: Attach pretty clips to the ponytail holder on each twist, be creative with these as it’s a holiday style. Rub a pea-sized amount of gel or light styling cream between your palms and scrunch the curls to finish.

Pain Relievers for Infants and Children: FeverAll® Cool Pack Giveaway

Good afternoon Michigan moms and visiting readers.  I have some information that I would like to relay to you regarding pain relievers.  After all, having babies/children and being a busy parent can sometimes take a toll not only on us as moms, but on our little ones as well.

Do you have a baby currently in the teething phase?  Even though it is an exciting milestone, it can also be a painful and miserable time for many babies. I definitely remember those days with my girls.  This can also be stressful on mommy and daddy too depending on the severity.  "You can be prepared to help provide temporary relief for your little one's teething pain, even as young as six months, when oral pain medication won't go or stay down (spitting it out, etc.) with  FeverAll® Acetaminophen Suppositories.  This  is an alternative to oral acetaminophen for temporary pain relief and fever reduction: no fuss, no mess, just confident, accurate dosing your child's age every single time."

Why should you consider keeping FeverAll® in your medicine cabinet?  Here is info provided for this blog by FeverAll®:

    • Did you know that Benzocaine teething gels are a no-no?  Just this year, the FDA advised against using teething medicine containing benzocaine commonly found in teething gels.  Acetaminophen is safe when used as directed and is commonly recommended by pediatricians as a temporary pain reliever for teething.
    • As a parent, you know to expect the unexpected.  With FeverAll®, you will be ready to temporarly relieve your infant's or child's pain and reduce fever, even when you are unable to get them to take ligquid acetaminophen orally due to fussiness, vomiting, spitting up, or spitting out.
    • FeverAll® is trusted: It's an Official Recommended Product of "Mommy MD Guides." (http://www.mommymdguides.com ), and parents and healthcare providers have relied on the accuracy and easy-of-use of FeverAll® for more than 30 years to temporarily relieve pain and reduce fever.
    • There's nothing else like it: FeverAll® is the top national brand of acetaminophen in suppository form and FeverAll® Infants Strength (80 mg) is the ONLY acetaminophen suppository approved for infants as young as six months.
FeverAll® is available at major retailers and drugstores across the U.S., such as CVS, Rite Aid, Walgreens, and Walmart, for a suggested retail price of approximately $7.00 for a package of six suppositories.  It is available in three strengths randing from Infants to Children's and Jr. Strength for kids up to 12 years of age.  Learn more about FeverAll® at www.FeverAll.com. You can also become a fan on Facebook at www.Facebook.com/FeverAll

This is great info to have, especially when you have a miserable little teether.  Would you consider using this product as a safer alternative to teething gels?

I currently have one sample box of FeverAll®  available to one of my readers with a teething baby.  If you would be interested, please email me at: lindsey@michiganhomemommyworks.com
First come, first serve. (6 suppositories)

Here is a giveaway for a branded FeverAll® branded cool pack and FeverAll Suppositories.  The cool pack is great even if you don't have a teething baby. This giveaway is for U.S residents only.

Michigan Home Mommy Works received a sample of FeverAll® and a cool pack in exchange for this post.  All opinions expressed here, if any, are honest and my own.

    Michigan Mommy Christmas

Hello fellow Michigan mommies.  I am sorry for the delay in posting.  My sweet uncle passed away Tuesday morning. (My mom's younger brother)  It has been a rough road, but God is faithful and we know that he is no longer suffering and that we will see him again one day.  My heart aches, but it is full at the same time.  Supernatural peace is amazing.  Please keep my mom and the family in your thoughts and prayers as we prepare for his memorial in the days ahead.

Here's a question for you regarding Christmas traditions and I would love to hear from you about this.  What is one family Christmas tradition that you do with your family?  This doesn't have to involve gifts.  For example, my family lights a Christmas candle in memory of our son that passed away in 2005.  It is just something we started shortly after his passing and have been going strong ever since.  On Christmas morning we always read the story of Christ's birth out of the Bible and sing Happy Birthday to Jesus.  The girls want to start making a cake or something too, so I thought that would be fun and sweet.  We try to make it as memorable as possible.  I understand that a lot of families struggle during this time of year so I want to be sensitive to that as well.

Feel free to post your comments below.  I look forward to reading them.

    Many Blessings!

Christmas Gift Ideas with Mama Bee and Baby Bee Products

I trust you all had a wonderful and blessed Thanksgiving!  We enjoyed a trip up north with wacky weather.  66 degrees Thanksgiving Day with no coats and the next day, SNOW!  It was definitely an adventure for all of us, but a wonderful time.

With Christmas just around the corner, I will be reviewing products with possible giveaways that you might be interested in.

Just recently, I got to review products by Burt's Bees.  Two products I got to try out was feet lotion from the Mama Bee line and the body wash from the Baby Bee line.

Even though I do not have babies anymore, my girls do have sensitive skin and I am pretty picky about the types of skin products they use, especially, body washes for kids.  The Baby Bee shampoo and body wash works awesome with a beautiful honey scent.  Their skin is super smooth without irritation and we didn't have to worry about the miserable burning of the eyes.  I also love the fact that it's all natural and healthy for your skin.  To be honest, my skin is also very sensitive, (gee I wonder where the girls got that from?) Haha! I have been using this body wash too, and my skin is awesome without irritation!  Love it!

I also got to try out the Mama Bee peppermint foot and leg cream.  This is not only great during pregnancy, but for those tired and restless feet and legs.  I love this stuff on top of making my feet and legs super soft and smooth. Rosemary Leaf Extract is one of the main natural ingredients within the cream.  I highly recommend this also.  I was just recently on my feet all day in my favorite high heels and though high heels rock, let's be honest ladies, they can wreak havoc on our feet eventually.  This cream relieved my achy feet on top of making them smell pepperminty!

JAWS Non-Toxic Cleaning Products Line Review/Giveaway

Happy Tuesday Michigan moms and visiting readers!  Two more days until Thanksgiving, can you believe it?  Where does the time go?  Who has started their Christmas shopping?  I can honestly say that I started this past Saturday.  This is a HUGE milestone for me as I usually don't start until two weeks before or the week before Christmas.  It feels good to be ahead of the game.

Jaws cleaner review, non-toxic cleaning products

This past week, I got to try out some pretty cool cleaning products called JAWS Cleaning System.  JAWS is simply an acronym for: Just Add Water System! I had a whole lot of fun using them too, haha.  Wait, who has fun trying out new cleaning products?  Apparently, I do.  I guess I was excited because I am always looking for Eco-friendly cleaning alternatives to better the health of my family.  Honestly, I think I finally found something that works for my household and I think you may like them too.

"We created and market JAWS® (Just Add Water™ System): a patented, truly ground-breaking cleaning system designed to reduce the environmental impact of packaging used in conventional spray cleaning products by conserving the resources required to produce and ship them."~JAWS

What makes JAWS cleaning products unique?

Well, as you can see in the pic, they come in standard cleaning bottles, but and here is the unique part, the bottles come empty with cartridges and all you have to do is add water.  I received three bottles:
    1. Bathroom cleaner/deodorizer
    2. Glass Cleaner
    3. Multi-Purpose Cleaner
"The refillable, reusable, remarkable way to clean. Just fill our reusable spray bottle with H2O, pop in a super-concentrated cleaning cartridge and you’ve got Eco-friendly cleaning power wherever you need it. It’s an innovative, easy-to-use, non-toxic* and effective system that reduces plastic in landfills, conserves resources and saves you cash. In fact, when you finish your Just Add Water™ starter kit and buy cartridge refills, you can make 2 full bottles of cleaner for less than $2.00 each." ~JAWS

JAWS Reusable cleaning bottles, non-toxic cleaners

After filling the bottles to the fill line, you basically just stick the individual cartridges into the bottle and insert the sprayer stem into it.  Upon first spray, the cartridge releases the cleaner into the bottles and presto!  The scents are not overwhelming and leave a very fresh and clean smell without harsh chemicals.  Oh, and they clean thoroughly.  For the multi-purpose cleaner, when spraying on grease and hard stains, just let sit for a few minutes and wipe away.

The set only costs $20.  And since the bottles are reusable (love that), cartridges are only about $2.00 like mentioned in the JAWS statement above. This amazing product can be purchased at Bed, Bath, and Beyond, Hiller's, and other local retailers.

SALE: JAWS is a BOGO at all area Hiller’s stores, now through Nov. 25. (www.Jawscleans.com).The cleaner line is regularly $4.99 a bottle (with one refill included).

Check out this video to see how JAWS works:

Michigan Mom Business Inclusion Into Christmas Guide 2012

I have decided to shelve the Christmas guide until next year.  It will be available in September of 2013.  Inclusion for the first 10 will be free and $5 after that.  This decision was made because I was a little late bringing this idea forward and decided it would be better for next year.  The guide will be made available for craft fairs, etc.  Updates will be made available next year as it draws closer.  Thank you for those who inquired about this opportunity! Can't wait to make it a reality next year.

Launch Out Into the Deep Book Review/Giveaway

Are you ready for an awesome book review and giveaway?  As a Christian mom, I am always looking for books that minister and exhort.  I was just recently introduced to an amazing book: Launch Out Into the Deep by Acacia Slaton Beumer. Here are the topics this book covers:

    • Life's Lessons
    • Fame is Not Always What it Seems
    • Living Water
    • Are you Ready?
    • The Secret Shame: Confessions from Men
    • A Word Spoken in Due Season
    • God Has a Plan
    • I Still Believe: The Cinderella Story
    • Stand
    • Single, Lonely, and Brokenhearted
    • Cries From the Heart
    • Keep Hope Alive
    and much more.

The cover of Launch Out Into the Deep will most definitely grab your attention as you can see in the title pic. If you are currently going through struggles and trials, you are not alone.  God desires to pull us closer to Him when enduring these trials.  I am so beyond blessed by the author; Acacia.  It is obvious that she hears from the Lord and has gone through pits and valleys in order to bring forth her ministry.

Upon reading the book, it instantly ministered to me.  Some topics are meant for whatever an individual is going through.  I honestly had a hard time putting the book down.  Not only is it an excellent resource for Christians on a personal level, it is designed as a group study.  The end of each chapter contains discussion questions where you refer to scriptures and share your heart.

I also love all of the poems that are laced througout  Launch Out Into the Deep.  They are so beautiful yet they are deep and meaningful.

Launch Out into the Deep, award winning book, is now available in audio and ebook!  The book contains a family approved seal for ages 12+ by Dove.org, a mom's choice award honoring excellence, and a Silver Reader's Favorite seal.
